Monroe-Woodbury Cadette Troop 319 assisted American Legion Post 488 officials with the legion’s recent Flag Disposition Ceremony. The legion regularly takes old, tattered flags and disposes of them in a flag-burning ceremony following strict protocols. First, the “old” to be retired flag was flown and honored with the playing of “Taps.” Following the Pledge of Allegiance and playing of the National Anthem, the new flag was hoisted into position. The “retired” flag - which is intended to represent all the flags to be burned - was carried to a location on legion property where it would be burned with other tattered flags dropped off by community members who are knowledgeable about flag disposition.
