In response to the letter about banning plastic bags of all thicknesses, it is true, it is crucial.
It’s important that we take this into account for other products such as water bottles and product packaging as well. It is completely unnecessary for the tiny SD card that I buy to be wrapped in layers of thick, sharp, impossible-to-open layers of plastic. Or the vegetables that I buy to be wrapped in choking sheets of cling wrap. More often than not, we are buying more plastic than we are the thing we’re actually out to buy.
The single-use water bottles that you send your child to school with, or take to the gym with you, contribute to the 1.5 billion tons of plastic in the ocean. More shockingly, the cases of water bottles sold in supermarkets are wrapped in plastic too!
Consumers are buying more waste than they are a natural resource. What is wrong with our other materials? There are so many alternatives such as agave fibers, cornstarch or glass!
People want change but don’t want to change. People want the change that will not affect them. Americans especially don't want to leave their comfort zone.
We need to make change happen and support the individuals and businesses who are making strides to make the planet a more comfortable place for all living beings.
