Monroe - As a loving husband, adoring father, devoted son, cherished brother and good friend, Tommy Dowd was beloved by those who knew him. When his life was tragically torn away on Sept. 11, 2001, leaving his family, friends and community in deep grief, they vowed to continue his legacy of kindness, in memory of how he lived and what he meant to us all. As part of that, in 2002, the Monroe Senior Softball League began holding charity softball tournaments. Originally established as a scholarship fund for deserving college-bound student athletes in the Monroe-Woodbury area, the Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation is growing to meet additional needs that embody Dowd’s spirit and dedication to living life to the fullest. The Foundation’s Board actively continues to develop new fund raising activities and seeks ways to address other local causes and issues, including the assistance of military families in need. To date, $25,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Monroe-Woodbury High School students ; additional sums have been donated to other worthy causes. The Tommy Dowd Memorial Foundation will hold its annual softball fundraisers in August. On Saturday, Aug. 1, the Family Fun Tournament and the first ever Orange-Rockland All Star Challenge will be held at Smith Clove Park in Monroe, starting at 10a.m. The eighth annual softball tournament will be held Thursday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 9, at both Smith Clove Park and the Monroe-Woodbury High School fields. There will be Tommy Dowd apparel, concessions and some guest appearances, with a party to be held afterward at Bourbons St. Café in downtown Monroe.
