Monroe-Woodbury hands Valley Central its first loss of the season
Valley Central. The Varsity Girls Soccer team's 3-0 victory lifts its record to 5-1 on the year.
On Monday afternoon., Sept. 16, the Crusaders traveled to Valley Central to face the undefeated Vikings of Valley Central in a girls varsity soccer match.
The Crusaders entered the game with a 4-1 record, having defeated Washingtonville 1-0 last Thursday at home on the new turf field.
The Crusaders controlled most of the first half of the game but shot after shot sailed high or wide. So the two teams went into the half deadlocked at zero.
The Crusaders took the field after the half with energy and a sense of urgency as they pushed the play into their opponents' end of the field.
Finally, Kaelyn Salatto found a wide open Julia Tycott inside the box and she drove the ball into the back of the Viking net to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders kept the pressure on and a few minutes later Emily Harwood lifted a perfect free kick to the front of the Viking goal where hard-working Marissa Key got a head on it and Tycott again punched it in for the score.
The Vikings woke up and pressured the Crusaders but the defense, led by Kayla Bauer and goalie Angela Fini, kept them off the board.
Late in the game Salatto hit Josephine Sorce with a pass and her shot deflected off a Viking defender and slowly rolled into the net to give the Crusaders a 3-0 victory.
The victory brings their record to 5-1 on the season. Their next game will be on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Kingston to face the Tigers.
