WHITE PLAINS — The Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Girls Basketball Team played Somers High School on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Westchester County Center for the 18th annual Slam Dunk Tournament Championship.
From the beginning, the game was a defensive struggle. The first quarter ended with the Crusaders ahead by a score of 7-3.
The second quarter brought much the same as the Crusaders played their tight man-to-man defense while the Tuskers deployed a very active zone defense.
Sydney Harwood scored six of her game-high 13 points in the second quarter to keep the Crusaders ahead at the half 18-15.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Tuskers cut the Crusaders lead down to one but were never able to catch them. Maya Bernsley hit two key three-point shots as Monroe-Woodbury took a five-point lead into the last quarter.
However, the Tuskers would not go away. With 10.5 seconds left on the clock and down by three points, the Tuskers got the ball into the hands of talented guard Hannah Angelini.
But Crusader Sydney Harwood came up with the play of the game and blocked the three-point attempt to give the Crusaders the victory.
The Crusaders' 38-35 win earned them the Slam Dunk Tournament title and brings their season record to 8-0.
