Central Valley. Prior to the game, the eight seniors on the team were celebrated; over the last four years, these basketball players are 66-18 and winners of two Section 9 championships.
On Thursday night, Feb. 6, the Monroe Woodbury Girls Varsity Basketball Team hosted the Bushmen of Pine Bush in an OCIIA Division 1 matchup.
In a ceremony before the game the Crusaders celebrated this year's senior class. The seniors on this year's team have gone 66-18 over the last four years and have won two Section 9 championships. They hope to add a third title this year.
The Crusaders beat the Bushmen earlier this year 55-24 when they met up in Pine Bush.
The Crusaders, who may have been still be wrapped up in the pre-game festivities, got off to one of their slowest starts starts in years as the Bushmen got off to a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
They woke up half way through the second quarter to tie the score at eight and then pulled ahead as Taylor Neely poured in 10 points to lead the Crusaders to a 18-14 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Crusaders stretched their lead to nine points as Jamie Waldron and Toni Neely each scored six points apiece to lead the attack.
The Pine Bush team, however, wasn’t done. With 2:30 left in the game, Pine Bush had whittled the lead down to five points.
But in a nice team finish, all five Crusaders scored a basket as they held off the Bushmen 42-34.
The Crusaders victory brings their record to 17-1 on the season their next game will on Tuesday when they travel to Newburgh to face the Goldbacks.
