Kingston. M-W varsity girls basketball team goes 3-0 in early season play
On Tuesday night, Dec. 14, the Crusaders took the hour-long trip to Kingston for an early season showdown with the Tigers.
It’s still early in the season but there is always a little more excitement in the air when two undefeated conference teams meet for the first time during the season.
The Crusaders came into the game with a 2-0 record, having just crushed Middletown 51-4 while the Tigers stood at 4-0 after beat Newburgh 57-53 in their last game.
In the first quarter, the Tigers took a 9-8 lead as both teams struggled against each other’s press defense.
In the second period, Arianna Exarchakis’ determined effort under the Tigers’ basket led to her hitting eight free throws. She scored 12 of her 18 points in the game in the quarter as the Crusaders took a 29-24 half time lead.
The Crusaders slowly pulled away from the Tigers in the second half.
Crusader, Madison Fileen scored 13 second half points and she hit four three-point shots in the game as the freshman scored 20 to lead the team.
The Crusaders’ 60-40 victory over the Tigers brings their record to 3-0 on the season.
Their next game was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 16, when they travel to North Rockland to take part in that high school’s holiday tournament.
