On Monday afternoon, April 24, the Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Baseball Team took on the Goldbacks of Newburgh in a key league game here in Central Valley.
The Crusaders came into the game with a 5-3 record after losing to Cornwall in their last game 8-3.
The Goldbacks entered the game with a 5-4 record after beating Middletown 10-3 in their last game.
On this day, both teams got off to fast starts, with the Goldbacks scoring three in the top of the first and the Crusaders answering back with three in the bottom of the frame.
From that point on the pitching took over and both teams were held scoreless until the top of the sixth. The Goldbacks took a one run lead, they then added two more in the seventh for a three-run lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Crusaders rallied in the seventh and scored two more runs but that was all they could push across as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Goldbacks.
On the mound for the Crusaders Jaden Fateman went five innings, allowing two hits with one earned run and striking out three.
He was followed by Daniel Ryan who went two innings, allowing three hits.
The Crusaders offense was led by shortstop Peyton Jamison, who had three hits, scored two runs with an RBI and a double; Kyle McDermott had two doubles and a run scored.
The Crusaders’ loss brings their season record to 5-4; their next game will be at Middletown.
