Spartans take two of three, record is 4-1

FLORIDA — Seward Spartans Joe Hoyt and Chris Dagele have effortlessly switched their All-Star soccer talents to basketball as Florida now focuses on the hardwood court. A 76-31 win over Division VI's The Family School sent the OCIAA schedule off to a fast start. The Spartans also downed Tuxedo at home last Tuesday before dropping a 56-51 verdict to Dover at Mount Saint Mary. In all three games Hoyt and Dagele have been the leading scorers, but that's only half the story. Against Tuxedo at home Dagele and Hoyt scored 21 and l4, respectively. However, Mickey Collins added l2 and scrapped for l6 rebounds while Brendan Myers notched an even dozen and pulled down nine rebounds. In the Division VI win against The Family School at Hancock Hoyt talliedd 22 before sitting out most of the fourth quarter. Ditto for Dagele who canned l2 in the 76-31 victory. Bryan Folkl and Collins chipped in with seven apiece. And the outside shooting seems to alive and well as the Spartan sharpshooters nailed ten three pointers in that one. Finally, in a losing cause against Dover the following afternoon at Mount Saint Mary Dagele registered l5 points and Hoyt tallied ten and dished out nine assists. Myers and Edin Sahmanovic each had eight. Those assists define Hoyt more than the points he scores. Always looking for the open man, he distributes the ball Seward's other capable shooters. That "Share the Wealth" strategy should pay dividentds for coach Rob Gravelle's team as the season picks up steam after the winter break.
