Skiing returns to Sterling Forest this weekend
Sterling Forest - After being closed for nearly two years, the former Sterling Forest Ski Center is about to reopen. The property has been acquired by Novenogan Development and renamed Tuxedo Ridge. Renovations of the facility are all but complete. Huge panes of safety glass were installed in order to view the lodge which features a fireplace and a grand piano. The restaurant, which will stay open year-round, is refurbished and contains a large-screen television set. New energy-efficient equipment was installed in the kitchen. Jeff Mahran is a former member of both the NYPD and the Village of Harriman Police Department. He also has 25 years of part-time experience at the old Sterling Forest Ski Center, and is now the general manager of the new Tuxedo Ridge. “The lack of snow and absence of cold temperatures so far this winter have kept us on the same footing as the other ski slopes in this area,” Mahran said. “It’s cold enough now, and we are making snow,” he added. “We haven’t suffered much loss of business due to the renovations because, before this week, we couldn’t make snow anyway.” Many of the current employees, like Mahran, have years of experience at the facility. More workers are needed, however, as evidenced by a sign reading, “Help WantedInquire Within.” Activities at Tuxedo Ridge will include skiing, snowboarding and tubing. “Brand-new skis and snowboards are being unpacked now,” said Mahran. The rental manager estimated that 65 percent of the customers would not have their own gear and would need to rent equipment. “We have installed new timing equipment for races,” said Mahran. “There will be high-school ski meets held here.” Tuxedo Ridge is located on Route 17A in Tuxedo next to the site of the old Sterling Forest Gardens and the current Renaissance Fair. At least four of the seven trails will be in operation for the grand opening scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20. Entertainment will be provided and Tuxedo Town Supervisor Peter Dolan will be on hand to help cut the ribbon.
