On November 13 at around 12:30 p.m., a 2020 Nissan van was traveling northbound on I-87 at mile marker 50.9 when it rear-ended a bobtail 2016 Freightliner tractor that was slowed in the right lane of traffic, the New York State Police reported. According to the state police report, the slow traffic was caused by an approaching work zone for line stripping. The collision pushed the tractor-trailer forward and into the rear of a 1997 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

Traffic was temporarily diverted off Exit 16 onto Route 17 West, according to the Woodbury Police Department.

The operator of the van was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as Theodore R. Johnson, 61, from Canyon Lake, Texas. The operator of the 2016 Freightliner, Adam C. Rice, 51, from Brick, New Jersey, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh by New Windsor EMS for non-life-threatening injuries. The operator of the 1997 Freightliner, Jeffrey W. Clark, 66, from Lecanto, Florida, was not injured in the crash.
