Those who stepped out for dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 28, might have unknowingly found themselves participating in a local fund raiser.

Sushil Bhagudia, the owner of Wayback Burgers in Monroe, hosted the event, serving up burgers, fries and all manner of delicious treats to benefit Pine Tree Elementary’s PTA.

A talented restaurateur, Bhagudia also happens to be father to children within the Monroe-Woodbury district.

Through most of 2020, he has felt the sting of COVID’s effects on the nation’s small businesses and was happy to offer his establishment in support of the event. Lots of people came.

And some were surprised to find Principal Bryan Giudice and Assistant Principal Timothy Martin serving up orders with a smile.

Open to Monroe-Woodbury as well as neighboring communities, families had the option of ordering from home and picking up, in order to reduce exposure.

To help with this, the two school administrators even ventured into the parking lot at times, delivering orders to families who chose to wait in their cars. Donating their time in service added an extra spark of fun for the parents and students who know and love them.

Restaurants aren’t the only ones to experience the adverse effects of a global pandemic. PTA board members are meeting challenges as well, forced to find creative ways to raise funds without hosting large gatherings within the schools walls.

So kudos to this enterprising PTA, for extending its reach beyond the hallowed halls of our beloved Pine Tree, to not only benefit themselves, but also area restaurants who stand to gain from the additional business that such events generate.

Sales from these fund raisers will help our schools afford year books, and opportunities to benefit our children’s social and emotional learning. They will also bring well-needed business to our local eateries during these challenging times.

Wayback Burgers fund raiser will not be the first of its kind, so keep an eye out for future events. Pine Tree families will receive email blasts detailing future offerings, but FaceBook, Twitter, and most forms of social media will also post details as they take form.

Feed your family and feel good about supporting your community at the same time. What a delicious way to make a difference.
