Fatal crash reported on I-84

Montgomery. A 21-year-old Middletown resident died.

On January 11, at around 2:57 a.m., New York State troopers from the Montgomery barracks responded to a one-car motor vehicle crash on I-84 West by Exit 28 in the town of Montgomery.

According to the police report, the driver of a 2017 Nissan Sentra was traveling west on I-84 “at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck a tree, and became engulfed in flames.” The Maybrook Fire Department and the Mechanicstown Fire Department helped put out the blaze.

The victim and sole occupant of the vehicle was extricated from the vehicle and was later identified as Melvin Moultrie, 21, of Middletown. Moultrie was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
