Tuxedo's pinwheels commemorate International Day of Peace

TUXEDO — The Tuxedo School District recognized International Day of Peace with its eighth annual celebration on the front lawn of George F. Baker High School on Sept. 18.

This day was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.

"At Tuxedo, we wanted to take a moment to remind our students about the importance of empathy, self-respect and respect for others, while encouraging them to be part of a peaceful global and school community," wrote Principal Jason Schrammel in a letter to parents. "Students from the K-12 program shared short writings of what peace means to them and musical performances from our kindergarten through sixth grades and high school choir rounded out our program."

As is district tradition, the event ended in the planting of student-made pinwheels in the form of a peace sign on the front lawn of the high school.

New 3D student designed flags, connected to school's flagpole, were added this year to integrate the district's STEM curriculum in this event, Schrammel wrote.

For the elementary level, the event also kicked off the district's Olweus Bully Prevention program.
