Snowmobile accident on Goshen Reservoir leaves one man dead, a second hospitalized
Goshen. State police from the Middletown and Monroe barracks as well as officers from the Village and Town of Goshen police departments assisted local fire and EMS at the scene of a fatal snowmobile accident.
Early Monday evening, Feb. 1, as the area was being pounded by Winter Storm Quiana, State Police Sergeant James Bodisch and Trooper Ryan Stutz responded to Reservoir Road in the town of Goshen for a report of a snowmobile accident with injuries.
Also called to the scene were the Village and Town of Goshen police departments, the Goshen Fire Department and Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
According to the reports filed by the state police and Village of Goshen Police, Bodisch and Stutz found an individual in the woods. He was later identified as Richard Stetson, age 55, who lives at 4 Reservoir Road in Goshen.
With the assistance of EMS personnel from the Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the troopers provided first aid and placed Stetson on a backboard and transported him to a waiting ambulance. He was listed in stable condition.
During this time, the troopers learned that Stetson and a friend, Arne Jensen, age 56 and whose home was located at 40 Orange Ave. in Goshen, were on a snowmobile on the Goshen Reservoir when the sled they were riding on broke through the ice and submerged in the water.
Police said Stetson was able to exit the water and climb onto the ice where he was able to call for help.
Members of the Minisink Hook and Ladder Company Cold Water Rescue Team entered the water and located Jensen.
Jensen was removed from the water and was treated by Goshen Fire Department and EMS.
He was then transported by the Troop F snowmobile unit to a waiting ambulance where he was taken to Garnet Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
This is an ongoing investigation.
