Slate Hill. Theresa Uhelsky to receive the state’s ‘Adapted Physical Education & Sports Section Amazing Person Award’

Monroe resident and Minisink Valley physical education teacher Theresa Uhelsky has been named the recipient of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s (AHPERD) “Adapted Physical Education & Sports Section Amazing Person Award.”

Adapted physical education is physical education which has been adapted or modified, so that it is as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for a person without a disability. The intent is to instruct and give students the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich leisure, recreation, and sport experiences to enhance physical fitness and wellness.

At Minisink Valley, Uhelsky’s adaptive physical education work includes students in classes across the entire campus involving Minisink Valley students with different needs.

“Ms. Uhelsky is a 24-year veteran teacher with our district,” said Athletic Director Tim Bult. “She works daily with our students at all K-12 levels and serves as a coach within our soccer programs each fall sports season. She’s an extremely hard worker who is passionate about her work with the students of Minisink Valley.”

The New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is an organization of health education, physical education, recreation and dance teachers along with youth coaches who are interested in promoting health, physical education, recreation and dance in the Kindergarten through higher education settings, throughout New York State.

Uhelsky will receive the award in April 2021 during the organization’s annual convention in Verona.
