MONROE — North Main Elementary School's "Girls on the Run" program completed its second year of activities, offering girls an opportunity to learn life skills and strategies through running games and workouts.

As part of its community impact project, the North Main group also joined other Hudson Valley "Girls on the Run" teams to raise $5,000 for the "Friends of Brianna" charity.

Brianna Skriver, 12, is coping with Batten Disease, a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. In some cases, the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling. Symptoms of Batten Disease are linked to a buildup of substances called lipopigments in the body's tissues. Because vision loss is often an early sign, Batten Disease may be first suspected during an eye exam.

The North Main team also competed in a 5k run on June 14 to mark its year of training. The experience-based curriculum combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education.

In addition to workouts, the girls took part in lessons which encouraged positive emotional, social, mental and physical development, according to North Main officials.
