Neuhaus names State Police Captain Peter J. Cirigliano II Orange County’s Commissioner of Emergency Services

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus announced this week that decorated New York State Police Captain Peter J. Cirigliano II has been named the county’s next Commissioner of Emergency Services.

Cirigliano will succeed Brendan Casey, who is retiring later this month. Casey has served as Orange County’s Commissioner of Emergency Services for seven years and has dedicated 37 years of his life to public service.

Cirigliano’s first day as Commissioner of Emergency Services will tentatively be Oct. 2.

“I have worked closely with Peter Cirigliano for several years and have always been impressed by his knowledge, professionalism, and leadership,” Neuhaus said. “Peter cares deeply about the well-being and safety of the residents that he serves. He is very passionate, detail-orientated and possesses a solid vision for the county’s Department of Emergency Services. I’m very confident that he will do a great job for Orange County.”

Cirigliano’s responsibilities will include the administration, management and supervision of the operation of the Emergency Services department, which encompasses the Divisions of Fire, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Communications and Police Liaison Services. The commissioner also directs the development and implementation of policies, procedures and programs to maximize the County’s response to incidents.

Cirigliano, a 1998 Goshen High School graduate, attended the University of New Haven, SUNY Orange and the University of Albany. He began his decorated career with the State Police in January 2002 as a uniformed Trooper in Monroe. He was recognized as the Troop F Trooper of the Year in 2006 and was promoted to Investigator in 2007 and assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Ellenville and Middletown.

In 2011, Cirigliano was assigned to the Protective Services Unit (PSU), which is considered an elite unit that provides protection for the Governor and the Governor’s family. Two years later, he was promoted to Senior Investigator in the Protective Service Unit.

While assigned to PSU, Cirigliano worked closely with the Secret Service on numerous events attended by the President/Vice President of the United States and the Governor. He was the PSU lead at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City for the visit of Pope Francis in 2015.

In 2015, Cirigliano was promoted to Lieutenant-Bureau of Criminal Investigation and was assigned to Troop F Headquarters in Middletown and a few years later was promoted to Captain-Bureau of Criminal Investigation and was assigned to Troop NYC.

In 2020, Cirigliano, was transferred back to Troop F, Zone 2. As the Zone 2 Commander, he oversees the State Police operation for Orange and Rockland counties and supervises one lieutenant, 18 sergeants and 120 troopers at nine different facilities.

Brendan Casey has built a strong foundation during his tenure, and I look forward to working with the talented team that is currently in place.”

The Commissioner of Emergency Services position is subject to confirmation by the Orange County Legislature.
