Members of the greater Monroe community gathered in front of the 9/11 Memorial off Route 19M during a ceremony on Monday evening to remember neighbors, friends, family and all those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
The Village’s Remembrance Service was led by members of the Interfaith Clergy, local government officials and members of Monroe’s emergency services.
Before the ceremony, music was performed by the Monroe-Woodbury High School String Quartet.
The ceremony began with the crowd pledging allegiance to the flag, before the Monroe-Woodbury High School Voice Ensemble sang the national anthem.
People chose to stand on the muddy lawn or to sit underneath a large event tent which organizers had assembled for participants to observe the service while remaining dry.
Members of the Monroe Fire Department placed floral wreaths on display in honor of those lost 22 years ago, while the Monroe Police Department and members of the Interfaith Clergy addressed the crowd.
Boy Scouts then joined the service by presenting and then lighting candles in another form of remembrance.
