On a chilly, blustery day in December, the windows in the downtown Village of Monroe came alive with holiday spirit.
Families, teens and young children came out to share their creative vision with the community. More than a dozen windows were painted with characters from Frosty the Snowman to Charlie Brown, The Nightmare Before Christmas as well as several original designs.
The project was sponsored by the Monroe Downtown Revitalization Committee, who provided the paint and assembled a panel of judges to award prizes generously donated by local businesses including Amendola’s, Bossi’s Bakery, The Depot Cigar and Candle Shop, Empire Diner, Flagship Cinemas, Planet Pizza and Plum House Sushi. Home Depot donated painting supplies including brushes, drop cloths, painter’s tape and more.
The award for Best Overall Design went to Donna and Sofia Lappetito for their Charlie Brown Christmas design.
“Monroe Free Library patrons and staff are enjoying our amazing painted windows,” said Mary Duffy, the library’s assistant director. “Not only at the library, but each painted store window brings so much holiday spirit to our Village. Thank you to all the contest participants and the Monroe Downtown Revitalization Committee for making our Village even more merry and bright this holiday season”
Added: Monroe resident Peggy Kazdan: “It was so much fun to be a part of this day to bring winter festivity to Downtown Monroe.”
