On Wednesday, March 24, Kaseyan Serrano became the 250,000th individual to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.
The Monroe resident became eligible for the vaccine due to her job; she is a medical receptionist at the Health Center at Bloomingdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey, about 37 miles from Monroe.
As a young Black woman, Serrano said she recognize the importance to getting vaccinated. It is not only for her protection against the COVID-19 virus but to protect her community and the fragile lives she encounters each day.
Serrano also said she wanted to take the vaccine to encourage her peers to do the same, to share the importance of working together to curb this pandemic. On hand at the Javits Center were members of the National Guard, who was all smiles to see this young lady of color taking a stand to assure folks “that it is OK to be vaccinated.”
