MONROE — The Monroe-Woodbury Rotary club raised a record-breaking $8,412 bell ringing for the Orange County Salvation Army.

In their 30th holiday season campaign, Rotarians, high school Interact members and other volunteers tended the red kettles at Stop & Shop, ShopRite and Walmart.

Salvation Army Major Mary Moore told the group she was pleasantly surprised at the results of the 2012 kettle campaign.

“In Orange County, our kettle donations were up 18 percent over last season,” Moore said in the Rotary’s press release announcing its donation. “That’s fortunate, because the need is up too. We helped over 350 families this year.”

Rotarian Bob Pollsen, the club bell ringing coordinator, thanked the many volunteers for “braving some rough winter weather this year as they shivered and rang their bells outside.”

Moore added that every dollar dropped in the kettles goes to the Salvation Army, with most of the resources used locally.
