— Nearly a dozen fire companies were called to a fire in Kiryas Joel Thursday afternoon.
The fire began at approximately 1:30 in the basement of a synagogue attached to a home on Lizensk Boulevard that housed two families.
Kiryas Joel Fire Chief Joshua Blumenthal said no one was injured.
Firefighters from many nearby communities assisted. These included Chester, Monroe, Tuxedo, Woodbury, West Point, Washingtonville, South Blooming Grove, Goshen and Salisbury Mills.
By 2:53 p.m. the fire began to spread from flaming debris which was caught up in the wind and ignited two small fires in the woods behind the building.
Soon after part of the building collapsed.
