The armed forces
Air Force Airman Nicholas L. Sanders has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Sanders is the son of Jody Sanders of Monroe and a 2012 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.


Graduations
Ensign Tara Mulligan, the daughter of Laura Mulligan and Stephen Murphy, graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point on June 17 with a Bachelor of Science degree, a United States Coast Guard 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage License and as a U.S. Navy Reserve officer. Tara graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in 2008.


Sabrina Cox graduated summa cum laude from the University at Albany with a bachelor of science degree in psychology; she also was an art major with a minor in education. She was on the dean’s list consistently for all four years of study.

Sabrina has been accepted into the graduate program in Los Angeles at the University of California and will pursue a future as a guidance counselor. She is the daughter of Angela and Ben Cox of Monroe and a 2009 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.


Alexander Rensink of Monroe has graduated from the University of Akron in Ohio with a degree music (brass performance).


James McGuire II of Monroe has graduated from the University of Hartford with a master of science degree in nursing.


Shite Sebastian of Monroe has graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., with a master’s degree in business administration.


Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh graduated more than 600 students during its annual commencement ceremony this May. Among those earning degrees were:

Dean’s list
Cadet Peter H. Buehlmann , a sophomore from Monroe, has been named to the dean’s list for the second semester of academic year 2012-13 at Virginia Military Institute at Lexington, Va.

To be eligible, a cadet must have a term grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and no grade below C.

Buehlmann is majoring in civil engineering. He is the son of Pamela and Armin Buehlmann.


Daniel Berger of Monroe has been named to the dean’s list at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. To qualify, a student must maintain a grade point average of 3.4 or higher.


The following students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Northeastern University in Boston:

Emma C. Case of Monroe, who is majoring in health science.

Michael T. Sobel of Monroe, who is majoring in business administration.

To qualify, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality point average of 3.5 or greater out of a possible 4.0 and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career.


Brenden Bourdeau of Monroe has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. To qualify, a full-time student must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher with no course grade below 2.0 during the term.


The following students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Fairfield University in Connecticut:

Gregg Perlmutter of Monroe.
Brian Mulvey of Central Valley.

To qualify, a student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.5 of a possible 4.0.


The following local students were named to the spring 2013 dean’s list at SUNY Buffalo State:

Claudia Okoniewski of Monroe, who is majoring in fashion and textile technology.

Brittney Singletary of Monroe, who is majoring in journalism.

To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.


Alexander Rensink of Monroe has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Akron for the spring semester. Rensink is majoring in music - brass performance. To be eligible, a student must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher and be enrolled in 12 or more credit hours.


Marielle R. Araujo of Monroe, a senior majoring in biology, was named a presidential scholar for the spring 2013 semester at Clarkson University in Potsdam. Presidential scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.


Jonathan Ross, a member of the class of 2016 from Highland Mills, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Students must earn a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average (4.0-scale) to attain dean’s list status.

Jonathan is a biology major. He is the son of Debra E. and Robert S. Ross and a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.


Junior Ryan Staudle of Highland Mills has been named to the spring term dean’s list at Hartwick College in Oneonta. Inclusion on Hartwick’s dean list is an indication of excellent academic work, including the completion of a full course load with at least a 3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.

Staudle is majoring in psychology. He is the son of Daniel and Alana Staudle.


Courtney Mallon of Harriman has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester at SUNY Cortland, where she is studying speech and hearing science. A 2011 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury, Courtney is the daughter of Kathy and John Mallon.


Honors, awards, programs
Nick Perez of Monroe, a sophomore pole vaulter at Rochester Institute of Technology, was been selected as the 2013 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year. Perez was the champion of the pole vault at the 2013 Liberty League Championships with a vault of 4.05 meters. Perez also shared the win at the 2013 NYSCTC Championships with a leap of 4.20 meters (he did clear 4.30 meters) in the jump off in that event.

RIT finished second at the 2013 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Championships and fourth at the NYSCTC Championships.

Perez is a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.


Katherine Ford of Highland Mills served two internships this spring at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. She is a recent graduate who majored in theatre with an emphasis in production and design.

One internship was for event management. Ford’s responsibilities included organizing events for exchange students from Senshu University in Japan, particularly a welcoming gathering, a goodbye party, a cultural event focused on Japan and other social gatherings. She was also responsible for setting up conversation partners for the exchange students. Through the course of the internship, she gained experience in working with international students.

Ford also served as an intern for the Office of Cross-Cultural Programs. She assisted with advising, conducted student information sessions, assisted with study away promotion at open houses and helped with pre-departure, re-entry and other events as needed.

Ford, a 2009 graduate of Monroe Woodbury Senior High School, is the daughter of Pamela and Bruce Ford.
