Joint Rec Commission unveils "Playground for All Children" on June 9

MONROE-The Monroe Joint Park and Recreation Commission will unveil the new "Playground for All Children" n a special evening ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9. The park's play area features ramps accessible for wheelchairs, along with swings, slides, and kid-level parts that sway, play music, twist and turn. "It's a wonderful feeling to be part of such a great project that will bring a lot of happiness to kids whether they're in a wheelchair or not," said Says Tony Cardone, chairman of the joint park and recreation commission. "It was a labor of love for all involved." The playground, located on the Franklin Avenue side of the park, off of Spring Street, was funded in part by an Orange County Parks grant and a donation from the Monroe-Woodbury Community Foundation. The Village of Monroe Police PBA and the Sons of the American Legion Post 488 and contribution. The Town and Village of Monroe also added funds for the enhancement of the area. In announcing the ceremony, the commission thanked the Town and Village Boards of Monroe; Tom Kennedy and Ray Heuchling from the M-W Community Foundation; Laurie and Allison Murphy; the Allie Foundation; and members of its commission. The park was completed with the help of Larry Oliveri of RO Excavating; Town Highway Supervisor Roy Montanye, Village Highway Supervisor Anthony Vaccaro and their workers. The simple opening ceremony will include hot dogs and drinks for all attendees and will held rain or shine. All Monroe residents are invited to join in on the festivities. Due to the limited number of parking spaces, the commission asks that those attending park their cars around the corner from the playground in the lot at Smith's Clove Park.
