William L. (Bill) Eckhardt

William L. (Bill) Eckhardt, a 14-year resident of Wallkill and former longtime Monroe-Woodbury resident, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old.

The son of Bart and Helen Loos Eckhardt, Bill was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Staten Island.

Bill was a cable splicer for Frontier Communications in Monroe. And was a self-employed contractor for 10 years, retiring in 2003.

Bill honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Bill was a former member and EMT of the Woodbury Community Ambulance Corps for 22 years where he taught CPR and EMT classes for the corps.

Bill also served the Board of Trustees of the Cemetery of the Highlands in Highland Mills for the past 18 years as was the current vice president.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Anita J. Terrell Eckhardt, whom he married on July 27, 1957.

He is also survived by his daughters: Judy (Paul) Rau of Pine Bush, Julie (Roland) Wagner of Florida, N.Y., and Jill Shea of Wallkill. Bill leaves behind his grandchildren: Megan, William and his fiancée Sherri and Patrick Grabowski, Joseph and Matthew Rau, and Jake and Kyle Shea.

Bill enjoyed attending all of the events his grandchildren participated in.

Bill is also survived by his sister Helen Ruffalo of Monroe, sister-in-law Ilse Eckhardt of Whiting, N.J.,; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by a brother, Bartley Eckhardt.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at the Community Room of the Cemetery of the Highlands, 634-640 Route 32, Highland Mills.

Inurnment with full military honors will follow the service at the Columbarium located on the grounds of the cemetery.
