Richard J. Sailer, a longtime resident of Rock Tavern and Monroe, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. He was 93 years old.
He was born on Sept. 9, 1927, in New York City, the son of George and Alice Albright Sailer.
Richie proudly served in the United States Navy as a Seabee during World War II, receiving the Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
He retired from the New York City Fire Department Engine #37 after almost 34 years of service.
He was also a member of Sacred Heart Church in Monroe.
Richie was predeceased by the love of his life, Theresa Bradley Sailer, in 1991. He was also predeceased by his son Richard Sailer; his brothers George and Charles Sailer; and his sisters Helen Johnson, Alice Courtney and Thelma O’Loughlin.
He is survived by his four children: Eileen (Tim) Duffy, Kathleen (Jim) Manera, Robert (Barbara) Sailer and Maureen (George) Sailer; and his 11 beloved grandchildren: Timothy (Lauren) Duffy, James (Laura) Manera, Katherine (Sean) Craig, Ryan (Kate) Sailer, Richard Manera, Meghan (Ryan) Useo, Theresa (Jim) Mason, Vincent (Jen) Useo, Joseph (Jillian) Useo, Amanda (LaMar) Bingham and Deirdre (Scott) Goedegebuure.
He is further survived by 11 great-grandchildren: Dylan and Ryder Sailer, Erin and Kelly Craig, Gavin and Ryan Duffy, Brady Manera, Hazel Bingham, Delilah and Declan Useo and Kas Goedegebuure, as well as many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. Two more great-grandsons will join his family in September.
Visitation was held July 19 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe.
A Funeral Mass was held July 20 at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Still Road, Monroe.
Interment followed in St. Anastasia Cemetery in Harriman.
