Lester Smith of Chester passed away at home on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020. He was 84 years old.
Lester was predeceased by his parents Lester and Elsie, his loving wife Virginia and his siblings Gloria, Rose, Sanford and Francis.
He is survived by his sister Beverly Weaver (Paul); his children Cindy Becker (Tommy); Lester “June Bug” (Donna) and Michele Mapes; his grandchildren: Kara Batewell (Shawn), Tricia Benjamin (Jon), Amie Becker (Matt), Amber DiMontova (“Mike”), Travis Smith (Sierra) and Taddy Mapes (Meg); his great granddaughters Hannah and Emma Benjamin and his great grandsons Kane Smith and Leo DiMontova.
“Smitty” served Local 17 as a laborer for 50 years and was a gifted mason. He loved splitting wood and had the woodpile to prove it.
He also loved trapping, fishing and hunting, and was able to share his skills with friends and family.
He was a talented gardener and shared the fruits of his labors with friends, family, and neighbors.
His favorite place in life was his house where he lived for 61 years.
“Smitty” described his idea of a perfect day as a snowy day on Sanford Avenue with his pot belly stove roaring and his “Ginno” by his side.
Greycourt will never be the same and he will be forever missed.
Visitation was held Nov. 6 at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 3 Hudson St., Chester.
Graveside services followed at the Chester Community Cemetery.
