Joseph Verbert Jr. passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at his residence in Chester. He was 91 years old.
The son of Joseph and Hilda Becker Verbert, he was born Aug. 18, 1929 in Goshen.
Joseph was retired from Orange & Rockland Utilities Gas Department. In his younger days, he was a dairy farmer and cattle dealer with his Dad, which was always in his heart.
Joseph was a 73-year member of Walton Engine & Hose Co. He was past chief of the Chester Fire Department, past fire commissioner for Chester Fire District, and past Orange County Fire District 9 coordinator. He was a life member of Middletown Elks Lodge #1097 in Middletown and a member of St. Columba Church in Chester. He was also a member of the Chester Seniors and, until 88 years old, was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Joseph was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Mary Board Verbert, who died in 1998, and his wife of 12 years, Carmen Verbert, who died in 2020. He was also predeceased by his brother Charles Verbert and sister Louise Flynn.
Survivors include his son Joe Verbert III and his wife Cathy and daughter Mary Ann Brischoux and her husband Claude; grandchildren: Melissa Verbert, Joe W. Verbert and his wife Stephanie and Kevin Brischoux and his wife Lyndsay; four great-grandchildren: Matthew and Emma Brischoux and Joseph Thomas and Addison Verbert; two stepchildren and three step granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held April 9 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe. The Walton Engine & Hose Co. also conducted firematic services.
Funeral services were held April 10 in the funeral home. Interment followed in St. Columba Cemetery in Chester.
