Joseph F. (Coach) Bayno
Joseph F. (Coach) Bayno of Goshen, N.Y., a former professional baseball player, longtime Hudson Valley teacher, high school baseball and basketball coach at Valley Central High School and John S. Burke Catholic High School, passed away peacefully at Orange Regional Medical Center in the presence of his family who gathered from all parts of the country. He was 84.
Son of Joseph and Mary Szefc Bayno, he was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Florida, N.Y.
He recently celebrated his 84th birthday with a huge party attended by family and friends.
Coach Bayno retired in 1991, after 31 years as a physical education teacher at Valley Central, where he was also the head coach of varsity baseball for 23 years starting in 1968. He was twice-named Coach of the Year by The Times Herald-Record and was inducted into the Valley Central sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
In addition, he coached varsity basketball for 15 years between 1966 and 1980 at Burke, where his teams competed at the highest levels, including state championships at Glens Falls.
At age 16, following his high school graduation from S.S. Seward Institute in 1951, where he starred in soccer, basketball and baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies signed him to a professional baseball contract. Because he was so young, his father had to sign for him.
Bayno also played in the organizations of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Senators, playing in such communities as Thomasville, Ga., to Great Falls, Mont.; and finished his career in 1959.
Beginning his life in the black dirt of Florida, N.Y., Joe travelled with the Army all over Europe and throughout the world with his children visiting locales from Paris to Tahiti.
Beyond his accomplishments, his greatest pride and joy was his kids. He couldn't stop talking about them. His love and influence on his extensive circle of friends, players and family was profound, and he will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Mary Bayno (Hal Ginsburg) of New York, N.Y., Julie Hoppe (Rich) of Burbank, Calif., Katie of New York, N.Y.; son, Bill Bayno of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; grandchildren, Claire Hoppe of Pasadena, Calif., Blaise Bayno of New York, N.Y., and Jaime Bayno-Jackson of Middletown, N.Y.; and great-grandson, Esvin Croix Castillo of Pasadena, Calif.; and cousins, John M. Szefc, Richard E. Szefc, Barbara (Scheff) Barrett, and Patricia A. Scheff.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dolores.
