West Point pipe organ recital This Sunday
WEST POINT — Meredith Baker will celebrate her recent retirement after almost 25 years of service as the organist of Most Holy Trinity Chapel, the Roman Catholic chapel which serves West Point, with a recital of masterworks for the pipe organ on Sunday, April 24, at 3 p.m.
Works of Bach, Franck, Hindemith and others will be included.
In her duties as music director of Most Holy Trinity, Baker has led music in front of three popes, Pope John Paul II at Central Park in New York City, Pope Benedict XVI at Yankee Stadium and most recently Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome, in addition to several cardinals and arch-bishops.
After her retirement, Baker will continue to serve as the music director of the Long Island Choral Society and Artist Music Faculty at Nassau Community College, while maintaining an active recital schedule.
West Point’s Cadet Chapel has the world’s largest church pipe organ numbering over 23,500 pipes in a cathedral sanctuary measuring over 200 feet long. The organ pipes fill the space from the massive six-tier galleries in the front to the horizontal trumpets in the back. This organ is heard by thousands of visitors every year including heads of state, members of Congress, cabinet members and foreign dignitaries.
Allow extra travel time for the vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates. Due to changing security requirements at West Point, check www.westpoint.edu/special before leaving for the recital.
