— Celebrities will take over behind the bar at The Captain’s Table at 547 Route 17M in Monroe on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. to benefit The Friends4Michael Foundation.
The foundation helps families whose child is fighting a brain tumor and was started by a Monroe boy, Michael Kwinn III, after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
On tapThe bartenders will include:
Darlene Rodriguez, the morning co-anchor on Today in NY on WNBC4. This will be the third year in a row that she has helped at this fun family event.
“I wouldn’t miss this for the world," she said. "The Friends4Michael Foundation does such great things.”
Joining Rodriguez will be Tony Cardone, the Monroe Town councilman and owner of Fran's Hallmark, who has been to each one of this events for the Foundation.
First time participants in the event this year include James P. O’Neill, the NYPD Commissioner; Elsie Rodriguez, the Superintendent for Monroe-Woodbury School District; Steve Neuhaus, the Orange County Executive; and Bob Caslen, the superintendent for the US Military Academy at West Point.
“This is a great time for local people to get out, have fun and really make a difference in the lives of a child who is fighting for their lives," said Mike Kwinn, Michael’s dad and the president of The Friends4Michael Foundation. "Michael would be very proud of how his Foundation is making that difference.”
Michael III was 13 when he was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor. He was a standout at Monroe-Woodbury Middle School in academics, football and basketball. None of that seemed important after his diagnosis, however.
Kwinn recalled his son telling him: “Daddy, I have so many things and have done so many things, but if people want to help, perhaps we can collect donations. It is too late for me, but maybe we can help other kids."
'I remember his resilience'Elsie Rodriguez, the Monroe-Woodbury superintendent worked with Michael in school when he was diagnosed.
“I remember Michael and his resilience” she said recently. “I know the Blue House rallied around him. I am honored to be a part of this event.”
Michael passed away 14 months after his diagnosis but not before seeing his dream of helping other kids through his Foundation.
Since his passing, The Friends4Michael Foundation has helped more than 2,000 families whose child is fighting a brain tumor across the country. This past year, they helped nearly 400 families – more than one each day.
Ray and Kathy Aherne, who own The Captain’s Table, will support the Foundation by providing a portion of the proceeds from the event. The foundation also will be collecting donations.
“This is a great local effort and we are thrilled to be able to help out like this." Kathy Aherne said.
