Society at play
TUXEDO PARK — The Tuxedo Historical Society will open its exhibit: "Society at Play: Bert Morgan Photographs of Tuxedo Park, 1920-1950," on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m., at its offices located at 7 Hospital Road in Tuxedo Park.
The exhibit will then be open Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment.
The career of preeminent society photography Bert Morgan (1904-1986) spanned more than half a century. He followed the rich and famous wherever they could be found on the social scene - at exclusive beach clubs, horse races, sailing and at fashionable nightclubs.
He was a trusted chronicler because he never showed anyone in an unflattering manner.
Morgan said his career could be divided into three phases: the Four Hundred, Café Society and the Jet Set. His images have appeared in fashionable publications such as Town & Country, Vogue and The Social Register.
The stimulus for this exhibition in Tuxedo Park was the donation of approximately 400 glass and film negatives by the Bert Morgan Archive. Similar donations have also been made to other seasonal communities where Morgan photographed society at play, including Southampton, East Hampton, Palm Beach and Newport.
This exhibition is divided into three sections: Tuxedo Park Horse Show; Tuxedo Park Kennel Club Show; and Winter Sports.
