Newburgh Symphony opens 25th season on Sept. 14 with a world premiere composition

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will open its 25th concert season on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Aquinas Hall on the Mount Saint Mary College campus in Newburgh.

The “Core of My Heart” program features works by Apollonio Maiello, Richard Wagner, Bedrich Smetana and Edward Elgar.

“The title is a line from a famous Australian poem and encapsulates the thread of this program,” said Russell Ger, the orchestra's music director (and himself an “Aussie”). “We start with Shelter, a world premiere by Apollonio Maiello, an Italian-German composer who sojourned in Newburgh last year. The composer will attend the concert and this first work of our new season is dedicated to our very own GNSO. Following this is the very tender Siegfried Idyll by Wagner, written for his wife’s birthday, Smetana’s Vltava, his magisterial ode to the Moldau River in his beloved Czech homeland, and finally Elgar’s portraits of his closest friends and family in the Enigma Variations.”

Beginning his fourth season of GNSO leadership, Ger has led the orchestra to new attendance records and artistic heights, most recently at the “Broadway in Your Backyard” concert in July.

There are six subscription concerts scheduled for the season, with the high likelihood of repeats of last season’s successful Moxart and Boscobel concerts.

Again, “Core of My Heart” will be presented Saturday, Sept. 14 at, 7:30 p.m. at Mount Saint Mary College's Aquinas Hall.
