Tuxedo Park School students competed in the Montessori Model UN in NYC

Tuxedo Park School students represented the kingdom of Bhutan while competing in the Montessori Model UN in New York City.

The students served on the Economic and Social Council, Human Rights Council, and Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Council.

TPS Students had the opportunity to meet with student delegates from around the world to pass resolutions by consensus. All students gave opening speeches at their council meetings on topics they have been researching since the start of the elective in September. Students forged friendships and learned more about one another's background during the evening cultural celebrations.

The Montessori Model United Nations program culminates a classroom study with a two-day global education simulation experience in NYC. The event enables students in upper elementary and middle schools to learn about the operations of the United Nations and its role as the world's largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organization.

In addition, like the high school and university Model United Nations Programs, MMUN provides students from 9-15 years of age an opportunity to:

· Learn about cultures, governments and peoples of nations throughout the world.

· Use research skills, writing skills and written and oral communication skills.

· Develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills and evaluative skills.

· Debate current global issues and world problems.

· Practice and use leadership skills in real life global situations.

· Understand the need for peace and conflict resolution throughout the world while developing their conflict resolution and debating skills.

Through the process of role-playing, each student becomes a delegate of a selected nation. They compose, present, and debate issues affecting their land and peoples of the world. By assuming the character of a citizen of their chosen country, they fully develop an understanding of the people's needs and the importance of accepting differences.
