MONROE — The puck was dropped on Monroe Roller Hockey League’s 16th season on April 20 at Smith s Clove Park, and it started with a hat trick of events.

A parade of players from age 4 through 17 marched onto the rink following the local Boy Scout Pack 340, who presented the flags for the national anthem.

Opening Day medals were handed out to the 24 learn-to-skaters and 11 mini-mites, inspiring fun and future growth in the program.

League President Tony Romagnino thank the Monroe community for its support. Community partners Joe Mancuso, Anthony Cardone and John Battaglia of the Monroe Joint Parks and Recreation Commission also attended in support of their partnership with Monroe Roller Hockey League. Without such support, the Monroe roller hockey program would’ve ended long ago.

A speech and ceremonial puck dropping by special guest Monroe Mayor James Purcell highlighted the day.

The new board of the Monroe Roller Hockey League has been actively rejuvenating its program this year, refocusing on the children and teaching good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, integrity and respect for authority.

Inline roller hockey is a great team sport that inspires children to be in shape, make quick decisions on the rink and learn to work as a team.

With a zero-tolerence fighting policy, it is a safe and exciting way for kids to get exercise. Offering programs in all levels of ability from learn-to-skate thru adults, there is something for everyone.

MRHL’s success stems from its tireless volunteers (coaches, league coordinators, board of directors and more) who dedicate not only their time but their love of hockey, children and building community in the Town of Monroe.
