Graduations
Brendan McFarland of Highland Mills graduated cum laude from the School of Management at SUNY Binghamton with a bachelor of science. He is a 2008 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury.
Meagan McFarland of Highland Mills graduated from Rockland County Community College with an associates degree in applied science. She is a 2010 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury.
Scott Barenfeld of Monroe has graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rochester with a bachelor of science degree in Physics and Astronomy.
He will be attending California Institute of Technology to pursue a PhD in Astrophysics.
Dean’s list
The following students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Herkimer County Community College for earning grade point averages from 3.25 to 3.8:
Lee Monroe of Highland Mills, a business major focusing on accounting.
Aysha M. Webster of Harriman, a business major with a concentration on fashion buying and merchandising.
Tricia Gunther of Monroe has earned high honors for the spring semester at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
Highest honors are awarded to students who earn a semester grade point average of 3.7 or better out of a possible 4 .
Matthew Woods of Monroe was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Matthew is the son of Robert Woods and Lori Currier Woods, of Monroe and is a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
Zachary S. Nussbaum of Highland Mills has been named to second honors on Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
To be eligible for second honors, students must have a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.79, of a maximum of 4.3.
Daniel Muller was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.
Joseph LaBarbera of Highland Mills has been placed on the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca.
Stephen Kilduff, a 2008 graduate of George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Mass.
To qualify, a student must be enrolled in six or more credit courses, attain a grade point average of 3.25 or better and have no incomplete grades.
Stephen is an English and writing major and expects to graduate in December. He is the design editor for the college’s newspaper, the Beacon.
Shannon Riordan of Monroe was named to the deans list for the spring semester at SUNY Oneonta. She obtained a GPA of 3.93 and has been on the dean’s list since the fall semester of 2010. She was also accepted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.
Shannon is a pre-law undergrad and is currently working an internship at the Westchester District Attorney’s Office.
The following students were named to the spring 2012 dean’s list at Buffalo State:
Claudia Okoniewski, a fashion and textile technology major from Monroe.
Brittney Singletary, a journalism major from Monroe.
To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.
The following students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Marist College in Poughkeepsie:
Jacqueline Frey of Monroe, who is a member of the Class of 2013 and is majoring in social work.
Matthew Ruis of Monroe, who is a member of the Class of 2015 and is majoring in environmental science and policy - science emphasis.
Diana Smith, Highland Mills, who is a member of the Class of 2013 and is majoring in psychology.
The following students have been recognized for their academic achievements during the spring 2012 semester at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.:
Shannon Chambers of Monroe for making the president’s list. To qualify, a full-time student must have a grade point average of 3.7 or higher with no course grade below 3.0 during the term.
Brenden Bourdeau of Monroe for making the dean’s list. To qualify, a full-time student must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher with no course grade below 2.0 during the term.

Honorees must earn a grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale, while completing 12 or more credit hours of classes during the semester.
The College at Brockport, State University of New York, recently honored students who excelled academically by naming them to the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester:
Lauren Monteith of Monroe, was named to the dean’s list with honors.
Estefanya Palacio of Highland Mills was named to the dean’s list with honors.
Kristen Leforte of Tuxedo Park was named to the dean’s list.
Terence McPike of Highland Mills NY was named to the dean’s list.
Rebecca Monteith of Monroe was named to the dean’s list.
Students who earn a GPA of 3.70–3.99 are named to the dean’s list with honors, while students who achieve a 3.40–3.69 are named to the dean’s list.
Awards, scholarships, honors
James Rivera of Monroe has received a $1,000 Merit Award as a new transfer student at SUNY Oswego. Rivera has reserved a place for the fall semester at Oswego. Classes will begin Aug. 27. He last attended Rockland Community College.
Oswego’s merit awards recognize students’ past academic achievements and potential for success. More than 100 transfer students are receiving the awards this year. They have a collective college grade-point average of 3.6 on the 4.0 scale.
SUNY Oswego has awarded merit scholarships to more than 600 incoming students, including $2,000 Merit Awards to several local residents:
Kimberly Heuberger of Monroe (Monroe-Woodbury High School).
Steven Iaccarino of Monroe (Monroe-Woodbury High School).
All of the scholarship recipients have reserved a place in Oswego’s incoming freshman class for the fall semester. Classes will begin Aug. 27.
Local students are among the just 43 orientation assistants at the University of Scranton:
Matthew Cifone of Monroe, class of 2015, is a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School and is a biophysics major.
Joseph Lofstedt of Monroe, class of 2013, is a graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School and is a early and primary education major.
Orientation assistants help assimilate incoming students to college life during sessions held for freshmen and their families during the summer. The following area residents were named as orientation assistants at the Jesuit university.
Evan Williams, son of Maria and Brian Williams of Monroe, has enrolled for fall 2012 admission at Rochester Institute of Technology. Evan will study new media interactive development in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences and is a 2012 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
