NEWBURGH — Monroe-Woodbury student Polina Chizhov earned the Grand Prize at the Congressional Art Show award ceremony in Newburgh on May 22.
She and seven other students represented Monroe-Woodbury High School in the annual competition. Her piece, entitled "Puppy," earned the top award.
In March, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney invited high school students in the 18th Congressional District to submit an entry to the annual art contest, and a panel of local artists judged the entries.
This year, more than 20 students participated in the art competition, and their work is currently on display at his Newburgh Office.
“Congratulations to Polina Chizhov for winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” Maloney said in his press release announcing the selections. “Every year, I am thrilled to see the artistic talent of our young people right here in the Hudson Valley, and I am proud that I will be able to share some of our region’s best artwork with my colleagues in Washington.”
Polina received two airline tickets to travel to Washington, D.C., and will take part in the official Congressional ceremony. Her artwork will hang in the United States Capitol for one year.
• In addition, Monroe-Woodbury student artist Edwin Lopez was awarded an honorable mention for his photograph, "Seasons."
• Fellow student Brandin Colon was named FaceBook Fan Favorite for his work entitled “Fallen Souls.”
Other M-W participants were Anthony Carrube, Brianna Brodsky, Brittney Zovko, Cassandra Baier and Hannah Parrella.
