Learn how to raise your own chickens

MIDDLETOWN — Thinking of raising your own chickens? Cornell Cooperative Extension can help get you started.
Rachel Moody, livestock educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension, is the presenter for "Getting Started with Backyard Poultry" on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Her topics will include:
Basic anatomy
Breeds
Basic husbandry
Equipment and facility management
Disease control
Join them for this introductory program to get you started with keeping your own backyard flock of poultry. They are fun, entertaining animals that provide fresh eggs and meat. In addition, your poultry will help control ticks and produce beneficial fertilizer for your garden.
This seminar is suitable for both children and adults.
Cost per person is $15, or $10 for 2017 enrolled members of Cornell Cooperative Extension Agriculture Program. Children 12 and under are free with an adult.
This program will offer an overview to flock management with emphasis on: pasturing flocks of poultry, management of the poultry house, selecting hens for production, common diseases of the small flock, feeding and nutrition of poultry.
The program will be held at Cornell cooperative Extension, 18 Seward Ave., 3rd floor, Middletown.
